[E3 2013] The Division - "Tom Clancy Goes Online"

As an old timer in the world of video games, Tom Clancy has turn into a huge Intellectual Property (IP) spanning different number of platforms, title, and even genre. Though I doubt Tom Clancy himself still handling these games, the games still looks great and probably one of the biggest Military-themed IP out there.

With so much experience and firm ground to stand, the next installment of Tom Clancy series (other than the new Splinter Cell - Blacklist) will take it to the next level. Prepare yourself for "The Division"! This brand new title from Tom Clancy will be, like they said in the end of the demo, Online | Open World | RPG. Think of it as an MMORPG Shooter. Maybe you will frown thinking about this, but the demo looks great!

In the thickness of FPS games forest, a Third-Person Shooter is really refreshing.
The Division will use their favorite perspective which is Third-Person. This is a good choice considering the number of First Person Shooter out there starts to make me bored. The user interface using those futuristic UI seen on several other Tom Clancy titles such as Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. On the screenshot above you can see all the information you need to know ranging from remaining ammo, health, to other player status floating on the side of your character, not static on the screen like traditional UI. The menu is also in the same holographic manner. It floats around on your wrist. And when you select the menu you want to see, it will pop up in front of your character. Its not just sound cool, but it IS cool. It reminds me of the time I saw Dead Space II's inventory.

Man, I can't tell what time is it...

Nice, McDonald has new menu

All these menu opening happens in real time, of course, since this is an online game. This holographic nature of the menu makes you still aware of your surrounding to some degree. Hopefully this will help you when you need to open menu when surrounded by enemy.

The nearest public toilet is at....
The map needs to be constantly updated for new area or event. Since this is an online game, I suspect that map will be utilized as a mean to distribute knowledge of new event or updates. This can be done by finding a map like that (this one was found at a police station) and examine it. Several texts will pop up and when complete it will tell you that the map has been updated.

Player map will use the same holographic system as other UI. When player open their map, it will show 'under' player's feet in an amazing manner. It will tell several key places around the city and can show which are is in critical condition.

They said I couldn't get lost with this...
As can be seen from the screenshot, the setting will be on the Big Apple. There's two bridges that connect it with Manhattan. From the chat between players, it is implied that we can go to Manhattan too. If they use New York as the setting, The Division will be one hell of a big world to explore.

The Division will have a companion Apps for mobile phone. But this is not just some gimmick or something to grab mere attention and not even a separate game for mobile. Using the apps, player can control a gadget and roam around the city just like in console. This gadget can be upgraded and has its own skill set. So even when you're not on your living room, say you're on a train station waiting for the late train, you can still help your friends on the field. This is quite a good move from Ubisoft as the developer since with this everyone can always play The Division anywhere.

Marking in a new cool way
In the screenshot above we can see a player using tablet controlling a flying drone. Using this drone he can help his friends by marking the enemy position which previously can't be seen. With the apps, players able to just hop in to help and play for a while. And when the train finally come and he need to go, he can easily hop out since his departure will not hurt the teamwork much.

What really intrigue me is the PVP. The demo shows us at the end that other players come to the team's area and one of the player said, "Brace for PVP guys!" In an Online game, PVP is a must. It hasn't clear yet, at least from the demo, how will the PVP system in The Division be. With open world and real time, an always PVP system will be too much. But then again if the PVP need a permission to be accepted by both party, the flow of action will be somewhat hindered.

Now it's me, you, and you against them. Who are they again?
The Division looks like a solid MMO Shooter set in a not-so-distant future. Some of us probably will feel like they've been there before since its New York. Using holographic UI, the game looks pretty. From the demo we can see that the game looks good and solid. With a lot of MMORPG scattered around and FPS flooding the scene, an MMO Shooter with third person perspective is a nice variation and I gladly welcome The Division. God, I want to play this very bad!

You can watch the demo below.
